For the second time the street art workshop “Silverpiece” took place in August. Under the artistic direction of PALOMIA, ten pensioners (from the City of Vienna's Pensioners' Club) and five young people (from the Josefstadt KOGA youth club) worked together to create a street art mural. The artist PALOMIA, who works under various pseudonyms, has been active as a "graffiti writer" since 1998.
For two days, the participants were able to familiarize themselves with the history and culture of street art, its aesthetics and terminology as well as different techniques in workshops. On the third day, what they had learned was put directly into practice.
In its first version, “Silverpiece” 2020 was a street art workshop for people over 60. This year, the initiative has been extended to include young people. On the one hand, the initiators oppose the attribution of street art as a domain reserved for young people. On the other hand, they have now also opened up the boundaries between generations with an intergenerational community project.
The project was accompanied photographically by the artist Costanza Brandizzi, whose artistic practice encompasses photography, printing techniques, painting and drawing. It is characterized by the use and recycling of different materials and their meaning.
In the workshop, senior citizens and young people learned “how their own message can be placed in public space and how this presence helps to draw attention to certain conflicts,” according to the initiators, “the mural is intended to motivate both generations to have a joint exchange about perspectives, meanings and world views and to create a special work in collaboration.”
