First launched by KÖR and INFOSCREEN in 2013, the short-film competition 20 Seconds for Art was held for the second time in 2015. Artists were invited to explore the subject of “City-Scape,” to be visualized in 20-second silent shorts. Some initial questions about “the city” and “urbanity” were ventilated to inspire the artistic process: In how far can public art function as an information hub? Where do centers of communication emerge, and how much room is there opening up for action? What kind of encounters does this enable? And where would public art position itself within this field of forces?
The call for entries went out to artists, students or graduates of art, graphic art, or film schools as well as other art-makers from Austria and abroad over eighteen years of age. Participants could opt for one or both of the media available on the Vienna INFOSCREEN net: medium I—forty-four screens in subway stations—and/or medium II—five hundred and seventy screens in buses and low-floor streetcars.
Five winning films were ultimately chosen from about two hundred competition entries.
