From Level Zero is a transdisciplinary, artistic exploration project of Vienna's Donau City. The Level Zero refers to the traffic-free zone in Vienna's Donaucity, a newly built district in Vienna's 22nd district starting in 1996. Matthias Klos and Hans-Jürgen Poëtz have asked experts from architecture, art history, urban planning, sociology and art education to write texts about this district. In parallel, they develop artistic works in which they visually and acoustically deal with the Donau City. These will be transformed into a final filmic result.

Residents were invited to share their experiences, observations and stories about the space, the place or life in Donau City and to submit them via the project website, where selected contributions - together with the already readable texts of the experts - were published and the artistic results were presented in November 2023. Little by little, a kaleidoscopic view of the Danube City emerged.

From Level Zero is a process-oriented inventory, with which the artists explore and make visible the social-media dimension of the architecture (Heike Delitz) of an urban space: "In The Decay of Lying, Oscar Wilde remarks that the fog in London was only noticed after it had been painted by the Impressionists. According to him, only aesthetically mediated perception enables people to become aware of their surroundings. In our examination of Donau City, we do not want to add to or oppose the place, but rather to look at the existing from other angles in order to develop new sensors for the surroundings: an inventory of the history and stories of the district, its peculiarities and character, its buildings and structures, in order to be able to develop a poetic imagination for the future."
