Not only is Vienna's public transport network one of the best developed in Europe, it has also consistently met high standards of design. This applies both to Otto Wagner's Stadtbahn, which opened in 1898, and to the design of the first subway lines in the 1970s, which has stood the test of time to this day. It is therefore not surprising that art has become an integral part of the design of subway stations as well. It is now a veritable “treasure trove” of artworks that is constantly being expanded with new stations. Always created for specific sites - from expansive wall works to digital installations - this is where artists can think big.
