The first pedestrian zone on Kärntner Straße was planned in the early 1970s. This was greeted with widespread disapproval, resulting in various architecture offices being charged with making Vienna residents more comfortable with alternative uses of city space. As their contribution, Coop Himmelb(l)au created four-meter large balls, pumped full of air and sporting abstract soccer ball designs, and rolled them through the city center.
