Before 1938 there were almost one hundred synagogues and prayer houses in Vienna, of which today every trace is blurred. They were all destroyed by the Nazis, with the exception of the city temple. 80 years later, a uniform, permanent sign is to be affixed in memory of the so-called November pogrom, which is to shine for the first time in November 2018 and from that point on will be a permanent and unmistakable reminder of the events of 1938. The sculptures in the form of an approximately 5 meter high metal pole carry an interwoven shining Star of David. The intention of the artist Lukas Maria Kaufmann is to turn the viewers or passers-by into participants in a choreography of perception.
"By approaching the sculpture and the tangled, curved lines of the luminous body continuously arrange themselves to form the uniform structure of the Star of David," says Lukas Maria Kaufmann. Each stele will not only carry information about the respective synagogue, but also a QR code that allows the virtual reconstruction of the synagogue to be called up.
