Sini Coreth, Johannes Raimann, Patrick Senwicki and Dominic Spitaler staged Last! Supper. in reaction to the inhuman politics of integration and asylum policy. Instead of political protest, they tried to find a possibility to remove the prejudices from this subject through the language of art and so to convey it to the Austrians and to the media.
Beside the performance Last! Supper. and Auslöser/Erlöser (Trigger/Redeemer), over the next few months at numerous open squares in Vienna life-size projections of interviews with asylum seekers were shown — for example in the showcase of the studios of Steinbrener/Dempf, in the Kultur-Raum Neruda or in the displays of the J. & L. Lobmeyr trading house. The videos showed people who had participated in the Votivkirche sit-in in the winter 2012/2013 and some also in the subsequent hunger strike, with their stories and their true faces. Those interviewed talked about themselves, about the situation in their home country, their flight and its reasons, but also the errors of the Austrian — and European — asylum system and the permanent insecurity of being referred for deportation. Furthermore the question was raised as to who today will take the role of the trigger or the reliever in the currently hotly discussed subject of the refugee crisis.
In addition, the project initiators invited people to a symbolic Last! Supper. In this way, interested passers-by, friends, politicians, students and artists could have dinner, together with the refugees at one table. A menu with questions that one should definitely order, served at the same time as a support for conversation.
Through their personal stories, refugees can become part of of our story and society. Last! Supper. gave them back their voice and directed the view at the individual again.
