Einen Augenblick Zeit

“Einen Augeblick Zeit” was one of the first digital artworks in Vienna's public space. Installed in the hall of the former Südbahnhof station in 1994, it became a landmark of the building after 15 years. After its demolition (2009) – as part of the construction of the main train station – the digital installation was exhibited at the Center for Art and Media (ZKM) in Karlsruhe (2011-2012 on loan to the Universalmuseum Joanneum in Graz). At the end of 2024, the piece of Austrian media art history returned to Vienna as a re-installation in the Schottentor subway station.

Embedded in two stainless steel hemispheres time can be read between two blinking eyes to the left and right of the escalators that lead to the platforms. Two computer-controlled eyes on monitors, one male and one female, look at each other. With the help of a computer system, the current standard time appears on their pupils – accompanied by the ticking of an old alarm clock, blink by blink. The back and forth creates a flow of sending and receiving, into which the passers-by on the escalators enter for a brief moment.

The conceptual and media artist and composer Hofstetter Kurt realized the first digital work in Vienna's public space in 1993 with “Planet der Pendler mit den drei Zeitmonden” in the Landstraße subway station; it can still be seen there today.
