The term of “extensive art” represents a broad spectrum of whatever art can be, and the multi-dimensionality of accesses to contemporary art. Most of the artists who presented works at this festival are active in several genres and cannot be classified as mere musicians, painters or performers anymore. They rather work across the fields and on an interdisciplinary level, while there is a knowledge transfer between the areas and the discourse is extended.
The festival for extensive art made this kind of practice visible for a wider audience. Side by side there were exhibitions, presentations, concerts, performances, film screenings and installations. In the whole process, the project itself was also “extensive art”, since it took place in an interdisciplinary context: the CUBE sculpture built by Karl Kilian out of 1196 VHS tapes, for example, was used multifunctionally as a festival, concert and exhibition space and was positioned at the intersection between architecture, visual art, media theory, performative use of space and social sculpture.
