As a reaction to the swearing-in of the black-blue majority in the government (national conservatives and conservatives) in 2000, circa 40 activists opened the Embassy of Concerned Citizens in a tent on Vienna's Ballhausplatz in front of the Chancellery. Among them were cabaret artists Josef Hader, actor Reinhard Nowak and writer Erich Hackl. The embassy saw itself as a provider of infrastructure and a place for cooperation for political, social and cultural activities in public space; additionally, the tent served as a contact center and point of departure for "Thursday marches" and other forms of non-violent government resistance. With the dissolution of the National Council, the Embassy of Concerned Citizens also ceased its existence.
