Bauprobe public works

Bauprobe

Bauprobe is a project of the London architecture and artist group "public works" in cooperation with the youth club and the young people of Steinbauerpark, which is often called 'Stonepark' by the young people. It describes the part of the park they own; the football pitch, the youth centre and Isi, the shop on the edge of the park where they sometimes buy their lunch or dinner. Through joint activities, a pavilion is implemented here as an extension of the youth centre. This will be the only rain protection in the park and forms an interface between the youth centre and the Steinbauer Park.

Bauprobe is a term borrowed from the world of theatre and describes the habit of testing a simplified version of a stage design with inexpensive means in order to understand proportions and special features before a design is realised. In the project, the term also refers to the process of designing and building together - how do you work with a group of young people for a short time? How can we think about design, taste and practical aspects together? How can the young people be involved in a meaningful way and possibly claim ownership? Scale models, self-built football walls, chalk spray graffiti, photographs and drawings are composed to a kind of "tableau vivant", which brings together actions and ideas in a picture.

At the invitation of KÖR, public works started to conceive the project Bauprobe in April 2018. The installation of the Bauprobe pavilion in June 2019 marks the end of the one-year process.
