This competition was concerned with the implementation of an artistic design for the Fritz-Grünbaum-Platz in Vienna’s 6th district. The six-month intervention was to consider the historical significance of Fritz Grünbaum as well as the spatial and architectural characteristics of the place. The project was expected to deal with the Viennese cabaret artist and Holocaust victim’s personality and life and explore the square as a vibrant urban area surrounded by buildings of special historical significance such as the Apollo cinema, the flak towers, and the Esterhazy Park. The stairs to the Haus des Meeres (House of the Sea) could be included in the artist’s plans as a location for the project. The submission was to put special emphasis on a participatory and communicative approach to the square and make a contribution to the discourse on art in public space.
Wendelin Pressl’s project REVUE emerged as winner of the competition.
