Taking inventory of today’s reality is a key element in the art of US sculptor and conceptual artist Matt Mullican (born in 1951). For “8 Gardens and 2 Signs” he incorporated objects of everyday use from occupants of the housing project “hängende gärten” (hanging gardens) into sculptures. Ranging from keys to roller skates and sneakers, the items were cast in aluminum, and the slabs were installed in the residential building complex. The work combines the occupants’ history and preferences to an archive of everyday life.
