From May 5 to 21, tears will be collected and processed into salt in the throughway at the Schottentor station. Barbara Ungepflegt, Hanna Hollmann and Marie Vermont are calling on people to hand in their tears or cry on site at the specially constructed tear saline. The artists operate the show saline, in which salt is extracted from the tears using an evaporation machine. Approximately 160 ml of tears are needed for one gram of salt.
If crying is found to be difficult, tear-inducing support can be obtained from the three “saline workers”. “After all, the dissolving power of crying is used in Wiener Weinen to produce a vital substance to maintain the emotional-ecological cycle of tears: Viennese tear salt is nourishing, brings happiness and brings joy to others.” (Barbara Ungepflegt)
The salt production is accompanied by a program of events and the tear salt can be purchased on site.
