Election Laboratory

The group WochenKlausur sees art as work on society and has been developing concrete proposals to reduce socio-political deficits since 1993.

Two weeks before the Vienna state elections in 2025, the group is holding performative elections in which people can vote not only for but also against a party.

It is well known that the electoral system in place has a direct impact on the election result. “Not only what is elected, but also how it is elected, affects the distribution of power and any political landscape can change if elections are held according to different (equally democratic) rules than the traditional ones.” (WochenKlausur)

The voting booths of the "Election Laboratory" are set up in public places on university grounds and in Resselpark. On the ballot paper, one vote can be cast for a party and one against a party, as well as the preference to vote for or against a party. Four different results can be evaluated from this vote: one result from the positive vote, one from the negative vote, one from the positive and negative vote and one from either the positive or negative vote. After the count, the results of the election are published and commented on by experts in political science, statistics and election research.

With the “Election Laboratory”, WochenKlausur aims to show how the voting mode changes the result and thus initiates a discussion on the significance of electoral systems.
