In 2016, KÖR Kunst im öffentlichen Raum Wien and WIENER LINIEN chose a discursive procedure for finding a design solution for the U1 subway station Altes Landgut in Vienna’s 10th district. The station extends from Favoritenstraße 217 to the traffic hub Verteilerkreis Favoriten. The artistic design intends to make the station permanently more attractive for its users, create a present-day modern atmosphere, and lend the location an unmistakable identity with high recognition value. The jury of the discursive procedure selected Yves Netzhammer’s project as winner.
"Gesichtsüberwachungsschnecken" (Face Surveillance Snails) ludically infiltrates the three large areas of art history, anthropometrics, and surveillance by confronting passersby and hurried viewers with multifarious stylized portrait drawings. Railway and subways stations are zones of transit and surveillance, zones of encounters with thousands of strange faces of real persons and on posters that reveal themselves only as types and masks in the frenzy of everyday life. Based on the proportions and patterns of a face recognition software, Netzhammer’s work is playfully concerned with drawing various physiognomies and fusing them with the given grid of panels. The artist’s objective is the creation of a waxworks of stylized faces between man and animal, male and female, old and young.
