The US artist Donald Judd (1928–1994) ranks among the main representatives of Minimalist Art. The object “Stage Set” was developed for an exhibition at Vienna’s Museum of Applied Arts in 1991 and donated to the City of Vienna in 1995. Judd mounted six bands of differently colored fabric at different heights in a steel framework. The serial arrangement of forms and their simplicity correspond with the elementary spatial concept. The rhythm of the colored bands’ different heights conveys the impression of a subtle organization of space.
