Skulpturen am AlbertinaplatzAlfred Hrdlicka

Skulpturen am Albertinaplatz

For Alfred Hrdlicka’s eightieth birthday, eight life-size bronze sculptures were temporarily put up in 2008, and another five from spring 2009 to spring 2010, around his Memorial Against War and Fascism, which was begun in 1983 und completed in 1991. Human suffering and suppression in its many forms were central themes of Alfred Hrdlicka’s oeuvre. The permanent presence of violence and its impact on the history of humanity are given palpable visibility in the sculptures exhibited which span an arc from classical mythology up to the twentieth century. Thus they directly relate to this memorable site of the Memorial Against War and Fascism, one of the artist’s main works and a manifestation of crucial import for the city of Vienna and its history.
