A major popular cultural event on an LED video wall in the outback of the Seestadt Aspern and the body of the Notgalerie, which has been standing its ground for a year on a hill of this site as a widely travelled overall installation, form an unusual playing field. For the encounter taking place on it, the two artists Reinhold Zisser and Christoph Schwarz form a team of Viennese artists around them. Together, they investigate the tension between the sacred past of the building, which was erected in 1946 after the end of World War II in Döbling on a site covered by mountains of rubble as an emergency church, and the regime of images staged here by the major football event.

When the collective gaze is reinterpreted as a shameful gaze, this is not necessarily meant to allude to the unease that arises when nationalisms are cultivated under the guise of sporting competition. Rather, the logic of the title describes the role of an exhibition space embedded in the machinery of a major popular-cultural event: perceived at first glance as a mistake, an examination of the artistic content can challenge the existing order and enable a fresh second look at the world.

A project by Reinhold Zisser with co-curator 2018 Christoph Schwarz.

In the fresh air
Viennese Offspaces in the notgalerie
April/May 2018

The notgalerie Seestadt opens its doors to the Viennese offspace scene and offers them the use of the urban field as a platform. The trigger for this series was the Offspace Meetings that have been taking place regularly since December 2017. The notgalerie offers a stage for the synergies arising there. For each event an offspace will be invited to use the whole notgalerie including the possibility space of the urban field. It is up to the invitees to decide whether the space / the artistic production of the operators / or their current exhibition etc. is the subject of the event.
Last year a flagpole was erected for the emergency gallery, for which the artist Luisa Kasalicky created the first flag. For the series of events in spring, the invited offspace will engage an artist to design a flag that also shows the name of the space as a lettering.
