IM VORBEI

June 22, 2019 - September 20, 2019

In eight picture series by just as many artists they encounter individual moments in the Per-Albin-Hansson settlement. The students question the concrete location of the settlement from eight different perspectives, each with different working methods. They work their way through the structures of the settlement: the historical development, the arrangement of the houses with their facades, floor plans, the green spaces and their relationship to the buildings, the inhabitants and the found set pieces. The process spans a wide arc until all the works return to the settlement in their reflections. When they translate what they find in the settlement into an artistic process, is the result reflection or imagination? The showcases become mirrors and windows at the same time.

To walk past the showcases, on the other hand, resembles a very slow stop-motion film, in which movement takes place between the individual images. This is also the case with the Bergtaidingweg: one's own movement corresponds with the series of pictures, which imply a metaphorical movement. The question of time in pictures is also reflected in the individual work series in an individual way. Depending on the starting point of the work - the recognition and sounding out of structures as an inner arrangement or external disposition - the artistic contributions pick out individual phenomena within which the timelessness of the picture enters into a relationship with the present time of the observation.

By means of multiple medial and intellectual translations, sometimes very small moments from the settlement are extended into a general reflection on perception and are related to the question of the politics of exhibiting in public space as a specific spatio-temporal category. Thus the exhibition space in Alma-Rosé-Gasse also has a double function, which is created by means of furniture designed for the site. The latter functions as an image carrier when the exhibition space is closed. When it is open, the "art" as furniture moves outside and the space itself becomes a pure service point.
