How do comments, ratings and images on Google Maps shape the city? Cosima Terrasse (Gruppe Laokoon) explores the interaction between digital and analog space with the help of data scientist Loriana Porumb and presents a digital portrait of Vienna. On three digital-analog tours through the 9th district we follow the artist with the project Gezinkte Karten to so-called points of interest.
How do comments, ratings and images on Google Maps shape the city? What image of a city emerges when you approach it through information provided by algorithmically managed online map services? Cosima Terrasse (Gruppe Laokoon) explores the interaction between digital and analogue space, creating a digital portrait of Vienna: ‘Gezinkte Karten’ (Falsified Maps).
In 2023, the artist offered three digital-analogue tours through Vienna's 9th district at the urbanize! festival, leading to so-called points of interest. (The research was conducted in cooperation with data scientist Loriana Porumb.)
In 2025, she will present videos created as part of the project at Vienna Art Week. ‘Gezinkte Karten’ uses Street View images to guide visitors to the best and worst rated places in Vienna. These cityscapes reflect commercial interests and the dynamics of rating economies.
