City Walk –
City and MemoryFriday, May 8, 2026, 5–7 p.m.

This city walk is held in German language.

To mark Austria's Day of Liberation from the Nazi reign of terror, the Festival of Joy is held every year on May 8 at Vienna's Heldenplatz. In the run-up to the concert by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, this city walk invites participants to engage with Austrian culture of remembrance. Together, we will visit selected memorials to the crimes of National Socialism in the 1st district and examine history, anti-Semitism, and responsibility in the present.

The tour begins at Alfred Hrdlicka's Memorial Against War and Fascism and leads to the controversial monument to former mayor Karl Lueger, which is currently being redesigned to reflect its historical context.

Along the approximately 3.5-kilometer-long walking route, participants will gain insights into the origins and significance of collective memorial sites and reflect on their social negotiation processes.
