In the summer of 2008, Irene Andessner realized a citywide poster campaign of stylized portrait photos mounted in 400 “Citylight” displays. The subjects she chose for her twelve-part series were women of merit, legendary and by now almost forgotten female personalities from science, art, trade and industry, politics, and society from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, whom she impersonated and interpretively represented in pictures to bring them, in her own way, back to public notice. Oscillating between historiography and contemporary art, the project was accompanied by a series of lectures of historians and art curators and complemented with an urban walking tour to the places where the female protagonists lived. The life stories of the individual female personalities can be read up on at www.wienerfrauen.at.
