Artistic design of the underground tramway station Laurenzgasse, 1050 ViennaCompetition winner: Heimo Zobernig

Artistic design of the underground tramway station Laurenzgasse, 1050 Vienna

From autumn 2009, the stations of Vienna’s underground tramway were modernized. WIENER LINIEN started with a rejuvenation cure for the stations along Wiedner Hauptstraße and the Gürtel. The architectural concept for the revitalization was based on a balanced mixture of introducing pointed innovations and holding on to elements worth preserving. The buildings were renovated with due regard to current regulations and guidelines, while retaining the style and charm of the 1960s.

WIENER LINIEN approached KÖR, asking the institution to consider an artistic solution for the intermediate-level entrance area of the Laurenzgasse station in Vienna’s 5th district. The plans for the conversion took the art project into account. The artist’s intervention was to improve the attraction of the space and create a new and modern atmosphere.

Heimo Zobernig’s untitled emerged as winner of the competition.
