Gemeinsam im Tunnel [Together in the tunnel]

Artist's statement
We find ourselves in the same place at the same time as other people – strangers to us. Together on public transport. Most of the time, we’re engrossed in our ever-present companion. Absorbed in our mobile phones, we barely notice the outside world. It wouldn’t matter whether we were on a train, a bus, in the woods or by a lake. Even though we’re strangers to the other people, and they’re strangers to us, we do exactly the same thing: together, yet alone. We are close yet distant. We are together in a tunnel (of vision).

Statement by the jury
In “Gemeinsam im Tunnel”, Emil Baumann playfully and humorously examines collective behaviour in relation to digital technologies. To this end, he creates a paradoxical situation by transposing observations made in urban spaces – specifically on public transport – into the natural world. The individuality inscribed in the body is thus transformed, through the medium of film, back into a collective, sensory experience within the social sphere.
