Along the U6 subway line, between the stations Alterlaa and Erlaaer Strasse, bands of color extend the entire length of the noise barrier and the retaining wall. Here and there, these bands break out of the horizontal. Old graffiti shows through the painting. Because what was already there should be left as the “history of the city” and become part of the artwork. This also includes the greenery, which the artist has arranged together with experts from MA 42, Vienna’s City Gardens Department. The sight enjoyed by the passing viewers is therefore constantly changing. Time and again, new spaces open up to them and it seems as if the painting is in motion.
In his artistic work, Markus Linnenbrink expands painting into three-dimensional space. He covers whole rooms – walls, ceilings and floors – with bands of bright colors. His paintings and sculptures seem to consist of pure layers of color..
The titles of Markus Linnenbrink’s works are one-word poems. According to the artist, deciphering them is a task for the viewers, at the same time offering an opportunity to enter the work. It is “an impulse to pause and perhaps spend a moment with the painting, to let it take its effect – just as one might do when looking at flowers.”
