FOKUS FAVORITEN

As part of the FOKUS FAVORITEN art exhibition, which focuses on the changes in the former Favoriten working class district, six national and international artists were invited to Favoritenstrasse. The diversity of people and cultures connects this rapidly growing and varied district with its historical charm and attractive new buildings.

Here in the expanded centre of Vienna, what is true for the entire urban area is becoming more and more concentrated: Vienna is growing! Rapidly and inexorably, one new urban development area follows the next. The city has also reinvented itself around the new main train station. In addition to the traditional workers' district, the new Sonnwendviertel quarter with apartments, hotels and office towers is being created. The longest shopping street has long since lost popularity and must now hold its own against the new shopping centre at the station. In addition to attractive new apartments, beautiful old buildings as well as their historical charm are waiting to be rediscovered. What unites both areas is the diversity of people and cultures that come together here.

Six artistic projects take up the situation in Favoriten, question them and the residents directly and give their answers, their music, their interests a new aesthetic form. In this way, the locations along Favoritenstrasse from Sonnwendplatz to Viktor-Adler-Markt are enlivened and transformed. Some works create new meeting places for a short time, other installations give them an irritating, but also poetic dimension for over a year.

A performance by Julia Bünnagel, participation projects with actions and temporary installations by the Department of Public Appearances and Britta Thie, as well as musical performances by actors around Ines Doujak take place on the squares, in shops and on Favoritenstraße. An interactive light installation by Alicia Framis is located at Viktor-Adler-Markt, and at Sonnwendplatz, Atelier Van Lieshout places objects that thematically deal with transformation processes, production and construction.
