Fish train-drain to the fish mass grave and fish factory Nordwestbahnhof: A hike to artistic interventions at the railway station area on the subject of fish murder, transport and processing
The area of the Nordwestbahnhof is located above a former branch of the river Danube. Its floodplain landscapes provided ideal spawning grounds and habitats for a variety of fish. With the regulation of the Danube Canal and the Danube arms and the backfilling and draining of large parts of the 2nd and 20th districts, building land was created for the new railway stations, ports, commercial enterprises and residential buildings. While the population of the city grew rapidly, the fish population was greatly reduced. To meet the demand, fish was imported by the Nordwestbahn from the North Sea ports, where it was processed - mainly by guest workers - in the Nordsee fish factory at the Nordwestbahnhof until the early 1980s.
