This city walk is held in German language.
The tradition of public art in Vienna is closely linked to a socially oriented building culture and therefore dates back to the 1920s, the era of “Red Vienna.” Art was intended to contribute to the design of everyday life, outside of museums and historic preservation zones in the city center, in the spaces of private life. The 1950s marked a golden age for art in architecture, when the City of Vienna constructed numerous public housing projects in response to the massive need for housing.
Along Engerthstraße in the 2nd district, you can discover numerous examples of public art in and around the municipal housing complexes. A walking tour organized by KÖR Wien and wohnpartner takes you to selected examples from both the past and the present.
