Monuments reveal how a society understands its shared history. Sculptures, busts and plaques of honour are everywhere in the city. Today, these collective commemorative sites are increasingly at the centre of public debates. For what these places remember and what they do not remember shapes not only our view of the past, but also of our present and future. On a walk through the 1st district, we look at the Austrian culture of remembrance, starting with monuments from the monarchy, through memorials dedicated to the crimes of Nazism, to current discussions about monuments in the city - not least the controversial monument to the former mayor Karl Lueger.
