Over the past few months, the monument to former Vienna Mayor Karl Lueger (1844–1910), erected in 1926, has undergone an artistic redesign and has thus been contextualized. Now that construction work at the Stubentor has been completed, the BAU STELLE ANTISEMITISMUS—using the monument and the discourses surrounding memory politics as examples—invites visitors to engage with the history and present reality of antisemitism in Vienna.

Individual perceptions are linked to historical sources as well as contemporary materials and issues in order to highlight the various social layers that converge in this location. This opens up new perspectives on mechanisms of exclusion and devaluation, as well as their significance for democratic coexistence.

The event, featuring discussions and educational activities centered on the tilted Lueger statue, will take place on June 26 from 4 to 6 p.m. around the monument. The project BAU STELLE ANTISEMITISMUS (funded by Wien Kultur, Call for Contemporary Forms of Remembrance) by the educational association “Lernen in gesellschaftlichen Spannungsfeldern” is taking place in cooperation with KÖR Wien.
