Karl-Wrba-Hof als Kunstgastgeber: Kunst zahlt Miete/Miete zahlt Kunst

What happens when people meet one another? Questions are asked, curiosity is aroused, answers are considered and experiences are exchanged. At these moments, memories of the future emerge: new stories. This is the theme of the project Karl-Wrba-Hof als Kunstgastgeber (Karl-Wrba-Hof as Art Host), Kunst zahlt Miete/Miete zahlt Kunst (Art Pays Rent/Rent Pays Art) — it deals with the development of stories that could not be told differently. Initiated by Kunst im offentlichen Raum GmbH in collaboration with wohnpartner — Das Nachbarschafts-Service im Wiener Gemeindebau (Residential Partners — The Vienna Municipal Tenement Neighborhood Services), the project was realized in October 2011.

These stories came out of an encounter between art, artists and residents of Karl-Wrba-Hof, a municipal tenement building in the 10th district. In the summer 2011 all residents and selected artists received an invitation to participate. The residents who wanted to take part took an artwork into their apartments as a guest. At specific times on four afternoons they opened their apartments to the public, who in this way could get to know the artists and the hosts. In total, the tenants of eleven different apartments housed artworks by twelve artists. The residents received an expense allowance which they could also use as a budget to buy the respective artwork.

This project did not concern the redeeming or releasing of common ideas about contemporary art or about living in a municipal housing block. Rather it was about facilitating encounters, talks and experiences intended to remain in the participants’ memories for a long time as lived stories. The focus was on the encouragement of a dialog. That in this context privacies also mutate into exhibits, is the nature of the beast — a major challenge above all for the residents, but also for the visitors.

Something shifted in each participant’s reference system. It became clear that certain ideas about certain realities do not necessarily coincide: moods, the furniture of apartments, opinions and perspectives — often they were totally different than expected. New experiences were being had. And sustainability came to mind.

Regula Dettwiler as a guest of the Ari family
Regula Dettwiler’s delicate plant sculptures adjusted naturally to the surroundings — they stood almost invisibly on the staircase to the apartment’s upper floor. The family parrot was enthusiastic about the new sound carpet — and the visitors sometimes did not know who uttered which noises. “Is it real?”

Mirjana Djordjević as a guest of the G. Er family
Mirjana Djordjevic’s video was perfectly placed in the living room. The flatscreen stood in the center of events and of the visitors around it. “Is anything moving?”

Thomas Draschan as a guest of the Arabaci family
Thomas Draschan referred to the copper work by the residents’ grandfather, which reappeared as part of the project. “Fantastic prospect!”, “And what does this have to do with the Austrian film Hundstage?”

Aldo Giannotti as a guest of the I. Winkler family
Aldo Giannotti’s light sculpture stood there as if cast in lead. The new kitchen was a highlight. “Where is the artwork?”, “What is a pizza schnitzel?”

IEFS Kiesling & Stolberg as a guest of the Miladinović family
IEFS Kiesling & Stolberg turned the tables and with the interactive art auction Wouldn’t you like to sit down? transformed the visitors to an exhibit. The sofa served to rest on — as usual, only this time not for the residents, but strange people. These so got to know a part of the city “from the inside” that they would have never seen otherwise. “Ah, he has been here already?”

Paul Albert Leitner as a guest of the Klobutschar family
Paul Albert Leitner’s photos were the starting point of the “Klobutschar Collection”: photographs, stories full of surprises. “You work on a computer?”

Marko Lulić as a guest of the A. Er family
Marko Lulić’s text evoked culinary memories in some residents. “I know this.”

mahony as a guest of the W. Winkler family
Two of the resident’s artworks framed the work by the artist’s group mahony and came to the audience’s attention with the introductory words. „Bir Tawil goes extremely well with Nofretete.“

Lukas Pusch as a guest of the A. Er family
Lukas Pusch’s photo lived on his narratives — and on the questions to him: “What Siberia?”, “Who stole the truck?”

Johanna Reiner as a guest of the Kozan family
Johanna Reiner anticipated the question about the workplace. Other family ties between Vienna and Turkey were incidental: the family father’s sister lives in a place where the artist realized a project in 2011. “Please send warm greetings.”

Axel Stockburger as a guest of the Mete family
Axel Stockburger’s digital photo-/ videoframe about Chinese Cos players did not attract much attention on the shelf among the family photos. “Are these costumes homemade?”, “And where does your son live now?”

Kunst zahlt Miete/Miete zahlt Kunst (Art Pays Rent/Rent Pays Art) was based on the idea by Gerald Matt and Ronald Jörg conceived for the project Art is Half of the Rent 1993 in Bludenz (AT).
