Fonds Kunst im öffentlichen Raum (2004 – 2007)

The Fonds Kunst im öffentlichen Raum (Fund for Art in Public Space) was founded in 2004 by the administrative units Culture, City Planning and Housing. Its goal was to enhance, promote, document and disseminate art in public space. The funding was provided by the administrative units of the city of Vienna that implement public building plans (City Planning or Housing) and amounted to an annual budget of approximately 800,000 euros. Based on the experience and success of the initial years from 2004 to 2007, the fund was transformed into a GmbH (limited liability company) in July 2007.

The decisions of the founding artistic board were informed by consideration of the context and the specific location of projects as an essential characteristic of contemporary art. The guiding principle was to view urban space in its social context.
